What did you like best about this book?I've never been interested in bodybuilding, but this book held me to the end.  I was especially interested in his comments about food, supplements, and elements like salt and potassium.  Because I've lived a life fraught with allergy, I have massive amounts of prednisone in my system; though I've declined to take any more, the skin on my arms is so fragile that I constantly bleed under it.His audience at the '75 Mr. World was amazing.  Pimps in floor-length fur coats and fedoras?   Ladies of the evening in miniskirts and very high heels?  That's not the audience I would have predicted; but it was at this show, where he won several awards, that he realized how much steroid use was in operation with the other competitors.Robby is a fascinating character.  I  hope he'll write a book for new bodybuilders with advice about food and other aspects of self-care.How can the author improve this book?Robby, I don't have a lot of criticism of this book.  Whether you or an editor put it together, your story is compelling.  If I were writing this book, I would take out some of the angry Weider references; but they are certainly not fatal.  I hope you're giving some free copies to gyms and Boys Clubs

From the Inside Flap
The Foreword from The Black PrinceRobby Robinson is an enigmatic figure in the history of bodybuilding. He is a genuine introvert in the genuinely extraverted arena. He is retiring whilst his physique is arresting. He is quietly spoken and of few words in an activity beset by hype and exaggeration. To encounter Robinson makes him no less of an enigma. He is an impactful presence. He keeps to himself, even in company, and yet when he does interact, he is there in a fullness of engagement, a profound intensity of communication that very few human beings can offer. When one relates to Robby Robinson, you encounter the history, the man, the physique and the bodybuilder. Of course, these aspects are all tied into the one person, but it is the interplay of these components of Robby's personality that make him such a compelling figure. The history is, in some ways, well known. He was and is a superstar bodybuilder; one of the most successful professional bodybuilders ever to take the stage. He won an IFBB Mr. America in 1975, drug-free, with a 29" waist and 20" biceps. His illustrious career included numerous World and Universe titles, Pro victories and culminated in a number of Masters Mr. Olympia titles. And yet an even richer history lies in the background. A childhood in the Tallahassee woods, an extraordinarily different home life and the experience of racial prejudice in the southern states in a less enlightened era. His formative history made him a man of remarkable resolve.Robinson the man is illustrated as his history becomes part of bodybuilding's history. Confronted with continued inequity and blatant unfairness, he did not sell out nor did he limp away defeated. He continued on, undaunted, letting his discipline and his physique do his talking. He remained the captain of his own fate. He kept his own sense of self whilst operating in a world that would (and has) totally unsettled and destroyed a great number of good people. And then there is the Robinson physique. Now aged 64, he has returned to the drug-free 203lb 5' 8"physique that first boggled bodybuilding's collective mind in 1975. Sitting opposite you, Robinson does not seem that big, except perhaps when you glimpse the triceps that seem to go on forever. But then he takes off his shirt and flexes ... and still he seems not so big... and yet he is huge.... As 20" upper arms still peak and bulge. Full muscle bellies crowd tiny joints. Flaring lats frame a minuscule, detailed waist, which suddenly explodes into sweeping, shredded quadriceps. He is both huge and small and rock hard. His physique still is a challenge to the observer's capacity for perception and appreciation. He embodies the true bodybuilding aesthetic. He presents a physical and optical illusion which is paradoxically real and right before your eyes. When Robinson walks, there is a feline grace to his movement. There is no waddling uncomfortable gait here, so often associated with the current 250lb+ competitor. An astute observer sees the fluidity of a champion athlete; the running back and the sprinter can still be seen in his carriage. His aesthetics are built upon a functional athleticism. And most every morning at 8 a.m. at Marina Fitness in Marina Del Rey, the bodybuilder Robby Robinson can be found training. He might be training with and instructing a local bodybuilder, or an interstate bodybuilder or an international guest who has flown half away around the world to participate in his Master Class. Or he might be training with his partner or by himself. But Robby will be training. Each rep will be perfect, each set will be at a specific cadence, each workout will have a specific purpose. Each muscle group will be engaged fully whether he is doing warm up sets of preacher curls with 40lbs, or sets of 8 squats and dead lifts with 450lbs+ (which he still regularly performs). All exact, all focused, all without histrionics or antics. Just focused, precise effort.Whether there is anybody else there or not, Robby is training. He is still learning about his physique, and its response to training and nutrition. If bodybuilding has a Zen practitioner, if bodybuilding has a venerable grandmaster of the art form, it is Robby Robinson. This book is a chronicle of Robby Robinson's exceptional life and the journey upon which it has taken him. You can glimpse his spirituality and his soul in the stands and positions that he takes. His gift to us? Robby Robinson, enigma though he may be, is what bodybuilding always has been about, what it should be about, and hopefully, what it may become again.PAUL GIBNEY Ph.D.Brisbane, AustraliaJuly 2010

From the Back Cover
As always with memoir, it's a question of, is this person's life worth writing about? In Robby's case, the answer is, unequivocally, yes! His experiences are unique. No one else lived this story. I think this is precisely the right book Robby should have written. It's as if he's distilled every question that he's been asked through the years, about his training, his life, and organized it perfectly in 200 pages. I learned a lot about the sport and all of the anecdotes, stories from his life are fascinating. The combination of teaching, tell-all and voice (his sense of determination and bravado are pitch-perfect: exactly right for the sport) make this a great read.Writer and Editor - Linda Davis

I am a retired Museum Curator and I am glad to finally see someone putting a book of this nature out for public review. Unfortunately, so many of us in academia have our hands tied if we wish to keep our positions. This book should be required reading in our institutions. Hopefully, the information that can be found in this book can one day be expounded up.

I must say that when I first began to listen to Mr. Butler via blog talk radio shows I was excited. I was still not sure to accept it though because no one else that I know of is saying the exact same things. I finally bought "When Rocks Cry Out", and was amazed. I recommend this book for anyone, even if you are not 100% in agreement with all of Mr. Butler's conclusions. I support him and his work anyway. We need more African centered or African American scholars writing books and sharing their wisdom with us. Mr. Butler actually brings to you, from his 12 or more years of research, works that have been available for years. He brings a fresh new perspective via helping you understand that the bible and information about Egypt was redirected to make us think that it was referring to something and someone else. He has some ancient maps that unfortunately are not in the book but can be found with a little effort, such as the Waldseemuller Map, the Puttinger Map can help and others. The author starts from the standpoint of the Spanish Exploration of the Americas. The author then labors to show you that the biblical events took place in the Americas which is why much, if anything, has not been found in modern day Palestine. He shows us an article excerpt from Margreet Steiner entitled, "It's Not There", in regards to Jerusalem being in Palestine. She, along with scholars such as Thomas L. Thompson, Philip R. Davies, Niels Peter Lemche, and even Israel Finkelstein (to some extent), will help you understand that "Palestine" as we know it today, is not adding up to the archaeological record as we may have heard. The author also states that Egypt began in the West as early as 23,000 years before Alexander the Great and that the monuments over in the Egypt at the east of Africa are actually talking about events that took place in the Egypt of the west which is the Americas (Mexico, Central America, and South America). I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you do your homework, you will find this to be so. He describes the biblical Exodus as really an African civil war where the Africans called Hebrews were taking the Africans called Egyptian cities in the Americas. He shows you the "real" route of the Exodus, which is why there is a scholarly consensus, currently, that the Exodus never happened. Some of the Africans called Egyptians eventually after the Exodus, and escaped to the East side of Africa to build that second Egypt as we know it today. The Africans called Egyptians eventually came back to the Americas to take back their city-states that they had lossed. So, the author, takes the position that the ancestors sailed from Africa, to come to the Americas and establish the empire that became known as Egypt, and some of them later went to the Northeastern side of Africa to establish the Egypt of the East. Scholars, preachers, and even some Afro-centric scholars ran from him while not confirming his discoveries. To date, no one has been able to refute them either. Later, I began to understand why he began to stand alone. The rocks were crying out what happened and where those things happened. Just because he was left by others, doesn't make him wrong. Please test his material. Well worth it.Some of the authorities that were used in the writing of this book includes Heinrich Brugsch-Bey, James Henry Breasted, Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge, and Adolf Erman (Egyptologists. Some of the ancient historians that were used in the writing of this book include Flavius Josephus and Herodotus. He uses very good Spanish sources, especially some hard to find, but with effort they are obtainable. He also used Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, and Basil Davidson. What if it is indeed true that the biblical events took place in a completely different landscape and area? What if, through clever ploys, the so called "Middle East" today is a modern creation which was hyped up by various people to keep you from finding out that these phantom places didn't exist in the ancient world? What if the "real" names and places and events happened primarily in Central and South America? I think that the author does an excellent job of demonstrating such. I recommend that you not just read this book, but study it by checking the sources, regardless of how long it takes you to not only find them, but also read them. The ancient records that he speak of will indeed show you that he is right.I do hope that he continues writing books by placing the further information that he spoke of on the blog talk radio shows. You can listen to his online radio interview appearances via jeditalkradio, know the ledge, occult science radio, which are all shows that you can connect to by scrolling through the archives via blogtalkradio. This little book, is so full of information, that you must study when reading it. Get the sources, check his information, test it. After reading this book, I had to put others' works down. He will change the way you see the past.

This is the most important book written in quite some time. Whereas some would have us stop, and cease learning about our true history with decades old works, Mr. Butler in this work has followed Dr. John Henrik Clark's advice that the student's job is to find the errors and omissions, whether intentional or unintentional, that the previous generation of teachers committed and correct them. This book will be a treasure for many years to come. Whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, a Moor, a Kemet head, or anything else, this book is for you as it finally brings the evidence that connects all these ancient cultures and texts together. Finally I will say that anybody who claims this book is not cited either has not read the book in full, has an alternate agenda, or is just stupid and doesn't know where the reference section of a book is. All of his sources can be found and read for yourself, and I recommend you do, as that will only bring further clarity to his discoveries. Many are even available for free online as they are old books in the public domain. Thank you for what you have done for my children's future Mr. Butler!

Pretty Amazing! To think a lot of the biblical events could have happened in the AMERICA'S? I won't lie and say im 100% convinced. He had some strong points in the beginning, weaker points in the middle and then strong again towards the end. I thought the part about Pyramids with steps on the outside being in America was a good point. If the Egyptian text is speaking of Pyramids with steps and there are no pyramids with steps in Egypt it's safe to say they were speaking of the pyramids in the America. So that was a solid argument. But when he starts pointing to places mentioned in the bible and comparing them to place in south America because they kind of sound like each other, im less convinced. But overall this is a lot of food for thought and Ive already gotten some books from the library to try to find more information for myself. Also the book is really easy to read which makes it that much more useful for research!

This book has left me wanting more. I felt like the author just skimmed the surface of compiling "mentionings" of all the research he seems to have done over the past two decades to give us his personal experiences during the research and the reactions he received from a plethora of people. The whole premise makes sense and I would love to see a volume or two filled with the actual research and not just the mentioning of what was found. Overall I think that it is a good beginning to tying together all the missing pieces of our past, those of us who are the lost tribes of the Hebrews. I could envision easily another book of sizable length detailing the findings, irrespective of his lack of "PhD" letters behind his name. He has done enough work towards this one volume to merit a PhD, however. As such, I would urge him to write the book he really wanted to write as I am sure the right publisher is just waiting to take him to the next level.Update: Upon a 2nd reading, I find that there is so much information of which I had not taken notice during my first read. HB has a nice way of giving lots of interpretive info concisely. This time around I took notes which made all the difference by slowing down to contemplate between chapters. Highly recommended study and reference.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* It’s fairly evident that this is a collection of blogs, loosely strung together, united in their varied perspectives on start-ups, CEO-dom, and business in general. Though Horowitz is a cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz and his credentials reside mainly in Silicon Valley, he’s imparted some valuable insight on hard lessons learned that apply to any manager, whether in the executive suite or not. As with most experiential books, it is all about him—but it’s written in such an engaging and universally acceptable manner that no one could object. Leave aside his background, for the moment. Who would realize, for instance, that executives worry about things like initiating layoffs, hiring the right people, training, and minimizing politics, among others? It’s a refreshingly honest take, and his colorful (and, yes, profanity-laced) language breaks down any other misperceptions about the role and the person. Plus, his imagination is compelling, such as the comparisons between peacetime and wartime CEOs: Peacetime CEO always has a contingency plan. Wartime CEO knows that sometimes you gotta roll a hard six. After all, the success equation is easy: the hard thing is getting it done. --Barbara Jacobs

I think this should be mandatory reading for anyone looking to start a company. Great read, I'd highly recommend it.

If you want to know why The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers is worth buying, here’s the money quote.“Almost all management books focus on how to do things correctly, so you don’t screw up, these lessons provide insight into what you must do after you have screwed up.”If you’re planning to start a company, whether it’s a high-tech company or the kinds of companies that I started and ran, read this book. If you’re going to be someone in charge of anything in any kind of a company, read this book.If all you want are the big ideas, or Horowitz’ philosophy, you can get them from his blog and articles. You don’t need to buy this book. But if you want a handy advisor for that 3 AM moment when you’re thinking about firing someone you like, buy the book. Keep it handy. I’ve had those moments and I wish I’d had it.The Hard Thing About Hard Things has a whole lot of information packed inside it. You can read it from cover to cover and get a lot of value. Or, you can think of it as a series of conversations with bosses and mentors. Horowitz had a lot of those. And his mentors included people like Andy Grove and Jim Barksdale. The wisdom that he shares and credits to them, reminds me of the wisdom that I received from bosses and mentors and which I later shared with protégés. It’s real, it’s practical, and it will help. I think that the discussion of things like firing and laying people off are more than worth the price of the book by themselves. And they’re only a small part of what’s in The Hard Thing About Hard Things. Here are a few quotes from the book to give you an idea of what you’re in for. You don’t have to be a CEO to use what’s here, even though Horowitz aims the book at CEOs. Substitute “leader” for “CEO” in most quotes and use the wisdom.Quotes from The Hard Thing About Hard Things “That’s the hard thing about hard things— there is no formula for dealing with them.”“People always ask me, ‘What’s the secret to being a successful CEO?’ Sadly, there is no secret, but if there is one skill that stands out, it’s the ability to focus and make the best move when there are no good moves. It’s the moments where you feel most like hiding or dying that you can make the biggest difference as a CEO.”“Don’t take it personally. The predicament that you are in is probably all your fault. You hired the people. You made the decisions. But you knew the job was dangerous when you took it. Everybody makes mistakes. Every CEO makes thousands of mistakes. Evaluating yourself and giving yourself an F doesn’t help.”“One of the most important management lessons for a founder/ CEO is totally unintuitive. My single biggest personal improvement as CEO occurred on the day when I stopped being too positive.”“Management purely by numbers is sort of like painting by numbers— it’s strictly for amateurs.”“The first rule of organizational design is that all organizational designs are bad.”“Embrace the struggle.”There are plenty more in The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers.

This is a book for CEOs of venture capital backed or public companies with 10+ employees. Unless this you are this CEO, this book will not be useful nor give you good advice; it will merely be interesting or a “what if” book.It is probably even more narrow: CEOs of venture capital or public TECH companies IN THE SILICON VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. The advice is very specific to Silicon Valley culture and a specific job in that culture. I’ve worked in Silicon Valley for 20+ years as an engineer and founded my own tech startup 2 years ago, yet this book still does not apply to me because I do not have the exact job described in this book. That being said, the book made a lot sense, seemed to cover new ground (especially CEO psychology and emotions) and was a quick read. It’s a must-read for the 500 CEOs or so that it’s intended for. My one doubt is that “Is It Okay To Hire From Your Friend’s Company?” is probably illegal in California.I got this book on the recommendation from Jumpcut Viral Academy and they should not have recommended it nor do I recommend that others read it. It’s simply not applicable nor useful to non-CEOs. But it’s easy to be star-struck by the author and inappropriately recommend this book as something that it is not. It’s an “already CEO” guide, not about self motivation, not about how to get promoted to CEO, not how to help your CEO, not how to be a VP, not how to network, not how to get funding, not how to start a business and on and on.

“Every time I read a management or self-help book, I find myself saying, “That’s fine, but that wasn’t really the hard thing about the situation.” The hard thing isn’t setting a big, hairy, audacious goal. The hard thing is laying people off when you miss the big goal. The hard thing isn’t hiring great people. The hard thing is when those “great people” develop a sense of entitlement and start demanding unreasonable things. The hard thing isn’t setting up an organizational chart. The hard thing is getting people to communicate within the organization that you just designed. The hard thing isn’t dreaming big. The hard thing is waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat when the dream turns into a nightmare. The problem with these books is that they attempt to provide a recipe for challenges that have no recipes. There’s no recipe for really complicated, dynamic situations. There’s no recipe for building a high-tech company; there’s no recipe for making a series of hit songs; there’s no recipe for playing NFL quarterback; there’s no recipe for running for president; and there’s no recipe for motivating teams when your business has gone to crap. That’s the hard thing about hard things— there is no formula for dealing with them.” This is how Horowitz begins.Horowitz gives advice to entrepreneurs. And it is not business school-like advice indeed. “People often ask me how we’ve managed to work efficiently across three companies over eighteen years. Most business relationships either become too tense to tolerate or not tense enough to be productive after a while. Either people challenge each other to the point where they don’t like each other or they become complacent about each other’s feedback and no longer benefit from the relationship. With Marc and me, even after eighteen years, he upsets me almost every day by finding something wrong with my thinking, and I do the same for hi. It works.”I began my review by quoting the first page. I will quote here with his final page: “Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes. They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness. When I first became a CEO, I genuinely thought that I was the only one struggling. Whenever I spoke to other CEOs, they all seemed like they had everything under control. Their businesses were always going “fantastic” and their experience was inevitably “amazing”. But as I watched my peers’ fantastic, amazing businesses go bankrupt and sell for cheap, I realized I was probably not the only one struggling.” […] “Embrace your weirdness, your background, your instinct. If the keys are not there, they do not exist.”The book is not an easy read. So you may not enjoy the book if you do not need to apply it now. Still it is a great book.
