Excellent detailed biblical commentary. Wide source of theological views for consideration with D.A. view summarizing in most cases the most widely accepted literal explanation.

In the process of studying the writings of John I kept seeing various commentators making reference to Carson. I have a friend who is also a big fan of Carson's works so both of these things influenced me to buy this work. This book actually exceeded any expectations I had. I cannot decide what is the best work on John but it is certainly between F.F. Bruce and this one.First I would like to say that Carson is very articulate and exact. He is not given to fanciful fits of imagination of clumsy exegetical comments. He is a real scholar who approaches the topic with class and sensitivity. The book started with him giving a synopsis of past hundred and fifty years of scholarship on John. He systematically deconstructs and dismantles every objection to the authorship of the Apostle John. He does this in a cool and calm manner that takes all views into account while exposing the weaknesses of the methodology espoused by Bultmann and his school of thought. This part of the work was colossal!Carson proceeds with the narrative with reserve and caution. He talks about a variety of views and usually shows their strengths and weaknesses pointing out the one he thought was most likely. He has mastery over New Testament Greek and his command of the language makes his ideas even more plausible. There are areas where he is unsure and he leaves those areas open with a few possibilities but usually he discusses why he favors one over another. He never resorts to belittling or running another view down but always proceeds with a cool-headed approach to theology.This book is unique because he achieves a strong balance. For those who are well-versed in the Gospel of John they will find this book to be a great addition to their library and will no doubt acquire some things to add to what they are already know. At the same time, it is not an overwhelming work and one could hypothetically read this book without any previous background to John's works and still walk away with valuable insights into the overall theme of John's Gospel.I would like to offer some criticism as I often do for other works but I really can't think of anything that was big enough to bring up. It is accessible, theologically sound, well argued, exhaustive, and professional all the way around. He deals with some delicate theological issues and does so without resorting to dogma like Sproul did in his work on John. Overall, this is a must for your library. I would say that this and Bruce are two of the best works out there on the subject. Carson offers great advice for young preachers who are preaching John to their people for the first time and great devotional reflections. It is a big work so be ready to labor working your way through it but it is worth it!

DA Carson is an absolute genius when it comes to gospel exposition! I have gotten through the 17th chapter of John in this book and I am nothing short of amazed at how easy it is to understand and how enjoyable it is to read. Dr. Carson has been a true blessing to me through this book and I whole heatedly recommend it to all!

The vast array of sources referenced gives the reader confidence that Dr. Carson has comprehensively interacted with the material. He is fair in his treatment of opposing interpretive views, yet definite in his own conclusions.The flow of thought is coherent and the writing style articulate, although I admit consulting my English dictionary once or twice. Because his treatment of the Greek text demonstrates scholarly precision, yet does not require knowledge of the language, I recommend this commentary to laymen and academics alike.Dr. Carson adheres to a historical-grammatical method of hermeneutics that well supports his evangelical outlook. I especially appreciate his consistent appeal to the context and logical flow of the book as a guide to judging between interpretations proposed by various commentators.Richard L. This has been incredibly helpful in writing inductive Bible studies on the book of John. I highly recommend it as a member of the clergy. What you'll find in this book is insightful and also academic. There are plenty of reviews on this book so I will end mine saying I have deeply benefitted from owning this commentary.

Excellent resource with insights into the Gospel of John. DA Carson does a good job and has a number of other commentaries one might want to add to their collection.

This is perhaps the best commentary on John for preaching and teaching purposes. While it still a choice for many scholars, it is easily accessible for preachers with less academic prowess. Carson, also, does a fine job presenting different interpretations even handedly, and sharing the strengths and weaknesses of these various positions. While I do not always agree on the position he arrives at it is a tremendous help to have the positions not accepted by the author treated fairly.

I like this because it presents the same material as the NIV commentary from a different point of view. This is more directed at scholars. I have difficulty with Carson's style of presenting differing opinions. It is not easy to follow.

About the Author

Rhodri S. Lloyd is Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. He serves on the Board of Directors for the UKSCA and is the inaugural convener of the UKSCA Youth Training Special Interest Group. He is also an Executive Council Board Member for the NSCA Youth Training Special Interest Group. He has previously consulted with elite level youth sports such as tennis, football and rugby. His main research interests surround strength and power development in young athletes and long-term athletic development modelling.

Jon L. Oliver is Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. He previously served as convenor of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science Paediatric Exercise Science Interest Group. He has conducted extensive research on childhood and long-term athlete development and translated much of this knowledge to aid practitioners. His work in youth sport has included collaborations in elite youth soccer, rugby union and athletics. He is primarily interested in the development of speed and explosive activities during childhood, together with the long-term monitoring of development, training and performance.

I admit that I buy a lot of books - ALOT of books. But I start them, and never finish. That was not the case with this book. I was drawn in from page one and while I didn't finish the book in one sitting, I finished the book in a few days. I took it with me everywhere because I wanted to see "what comes next" in Kate Motaung's story. I cried with her during her visits with her mom who had cancer. I applauded her decisions to follow her heart. I saw devotion to her husband Kagiso and their love of their three children. Growing up in Michigan and settling in South Africa is intriguing to me. I wanted to read more and know more. The dialog was beautiful with descriptions of places and events that opened the windows to what Kate wanted readers to experience as she experienced them. Throughout the book, Kate chose the perfect passages of scripture to support her story. Every time a passage was woven into the paragraph, I thought, 'Yes. Yes, that one is just right for this moment." Many of the verses, prompted me to think about how my life might be affected and I had to write them down. While this book wasn't intended to be a text book, it taught me things from the textbook on life.

This is not one you want to miss.I had the joy of “meeting” Kate Motaung several years ago when she took over as the Fearless Leader of the Five Minute Friday community. (She did not give herself this title. I did. I don’t remember why, but it’s stuck in my brain). We have chatted via Twitter, Voxer and blog comments. As I’m sure others can attest, Kate has the unique gift of making one feel at home; I don’t doubt that, were I to show up in her driveway today, that I would be welcomed inside for tea and good conversation.This is part of what made this book so fascinating for me. Kate writes of being torn between houses following her parents’ divorce and between continents after moving to South Africa in her early twenties. Her story is one of longing for home, of never quite knowing where or what that place is. Out of that longing, I believe she strives to give others a sense of comfort and security. Even those of us who have only connected with her through electronic means pick up on this and celebrate her gift of welcoming embrace.Ultimately, and encouragingly, Kate reminds both herself and the reader that our true Home, the place our souls ache for, is not to be found in this life. We get teases, little glimpses, that give us hope and keep us going when things get hard, but we never get the full picture. We have to wait. So we sit in the discomfort, knowing that all is not as it should be, asking Jesus to daily give us the grit and the grace to navigate yet another bump in the road.The pages of A Place to Land are full of honesty and humor. Kate looks unflinchingly at herself and allows us to do so as well. In that, we are given permission to be that honest. To acknowledge that we don’t always know the answers or do the right things. Her choice to tell her story in such a raw way is deeply refreshing. There are no neat and tidy bows, no pristine images of perfect kids and conflict-free living. There is, instead, a woman who consistently, constantly, preaches Jesus. His presence, His love, His guidance, His help. Over and over again, Kate finds Him in the middle of the mess. She shows the reader how to reach out for His hand.God took the tug-of-war that waged in my soul, the thick rope that spanned across the ocean, and yanked from both sides. He cut it clean through the middle, somewhere over the depths of the Atlantic. And He made me look up. To see that the greatest and strongest pull is neither east nor west, neither here nor there. It’s the heavenward pull.It’s the pull toward home.I now know how to respond the next time someone asks me the simple question, ‘Are you heading home?'” Regardless of my earthly destination, and purely because of the grace of Christ’s sacrifice, I’ll be able to answer with confidence, ‘Yes. I read this book in one day as I could not put it down, and wished it would never end. Kate writes in an extremely honest and real way that it just draws you into the story and you feel like you are living it with her. She is not afraid to share her raw feelings and because of this it was so easy to relate and feel understood in my own experiences and struggles with divorced parents. Plus I have a new understanding now of why no place on earth truly feels like "home." Thank you Kate for sharing your story and your struggles so honestly.
