In three reviews of Salvage the Bones (New York Times, Washington Post, Kirkus), Jesmyn Ward's National Book Award winning novel, no reviewer focuses on the centrality of motherhood in the book. Ward does in interviews she's given about the book. Also, the narrator's father is described by reviewers as an alcoholic, indifferent and abusive to his children's needs. Almost no one mentions Skeetah, the older brother narrator Esch is so attached to that she can almost feel him as part of her own body. In other words, all of these reviews, in my opinion, get the book wrong and miss the most important parts.Ward's book opens with birth: Skeetah's pit bull China is giving birth to puppies and the reader learns more about the mechanics of that than one might have hoped, but we also learn that China is the love of Skeetah's life. His capacity of care for her is big enough to encompass almost the entire bayou in which they live and ultimately weather hurricane Katrina that is approaching relentlessly throughout the book, villain and goddess of the book. The love Skeetah has for China, that older brother Randall has for youngest brother Junior, that they all have for each other and their Dad's love, flawed as it is, is the sinew that ties the book together and is Ward's contribution. As much as relations and inequalities between men and women and toxic masculinity provide a drum beat throughout the book, it is actually the human capacity for love, the undertold story of infinite male tenderness and even less told story of female ferocity that are its heart. While damaged emotionally and eventually also physically, the children's father spends the entire book preparing for the storm. Amidst his own traumas and anxieties, he gathers resources, boards windows, stores water, worrying as the storm approaches, while no one else heeds his alarm. In a book in which the Greek myths are an undercurrent, he is the chorus, announcing and heeding the omens of doom. Even Big Henry, a physically massive and emotionally stable tree trunk of a presence, reminds Esch over and over until she hears it that he will protect her and care for her, without permitting the selfish distraction of his own desire to drown her, like the boy she sees as a son god, Manny does.But it is the mother force of China, the echoes and remnants of love of the children's own mother lost in childbirth, Katrina and Esch, ultimately, herself, that is the main drive in the book. Like Medea, this force is as capable of wanton destruction (Katrina, obviously but also China's unthinking violence toward her own puppies) as it is of the kind of tenderness that keeps her children's faces unlined, unworried, bathed in love (later, motherless Randall's face is described as a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces don't quite fit), mothers marshal and command the power of the universe. It is not a power to be taken for granted or contained. It spills over, knocking down everything in its path. It is limitless, like when Big Henry's mother has room enough in her own damaged home to take in Esch's family, soothing and nursing them all to comfort. It is this force that Esch, in her coming of age and coming to accept her own impending motherhood, understands she must now marshal.

Um...I can see why Ward is a two-time National Book Award winner! This book, for me, was nearly flawless. I devoured the language and couldn’t get enough of the setting. A very unique characterization of a family. Some of the characters were better developed than others, and unfortunately the narrator, Esch, was one of the unsatisfying ones. But her brothers were all painted clearly and brilliantly. I lived for the relationship between Skeetah and China. And I loved how we got to live with the family for a long while before the hurricane came into their lives. It made it so it wasn’t just another natural disaster story.Gonna read all of her books now.

Reading this extraordinary book brought to mind a quote from Roethke: "What is madness but nobility of the soul at odds with circumstance." Four siblings and their father prepare for Hurricane Katrina and this novel takes place in twelve days as they await and prepare for the hurricane.The story is told from 15 year old Esch Bastille's perspective shortly after she has finds out she is pregnant. Motherless herself since her youngest brother Junior was born, Esch is trying to hang on to the impoverished but emotionally rich life of her family in 'the pit', their home is Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. Her oldest brother Randall has the potential to be recruited for a college basketball scholarship but lately his knee has been swelling a lot whenever he works out. Skeetah, her other brother, loves his pit bull China with a fierce and total passion. China has just given birth to puppies and her maternal instinct is in question. She is a fighting dog and the scenes of dog fights are visceral but essential to the core of the novel.What transfixed me was the mythological backdrop to the narrative. Esch, a good student, has a book on Greek mythology that she is reading for school over the summer. Her character is super-imposed on the Jason and Medea story and Esch notices that "in every one of the Greeks' mythology tales, there is this: a man chasing a woman, or a woman chasing a man. There is never a meeting in the middle. There is only a body in a ditch, and one person walking toward or away from it." As Esch deals with her feelings for Manny, the baby's father, she reflects on the Greek myth.While this novel's narrative focuses on a poor black family trying to survive a brutal and unforgiving act of nature in the face of very adverse conditions, it is really timeless. It is about connection, love, family and loss. It is about those things that are bigger than what we perceive on the surface, the geological core of our being. As Esch says, "I will tie the glass and stone with string, hang the shards above my bed, so that they will flash in the dark and tell the story of Katrina, the mother that swept into the gulf and slaughtered. Her chariot was a storm so great and black the Greeks would say it was harnessed to dragons."I will not forget this book. It has worked its way into my heart and being It is one of my all-time favorite books.

This is an excellent book for learning about not only AWS Lambda, but about other AWS services as well. That's because the author took the thorough approach of starting with foundational pieces -- by which I mean distributed and event-driven compute concepts, as well as select AWS micro-services used to implement them -- and wove a narrative that stitched them together into front-to-back working platform components. In my view, this is the correct approach because a similarly rigorous process is necessary when designing Serverless applications. And speaking of Serverless, you'll also gain perspective on the current direction that building I.T. functions and applications has taken. For readers who were never involved with the monolithic days of building applications and platforms, this perspective alone is valuable. The book is well-paced, extremely well-written and doesn't ask too much of the reader in terms of prior experience. AWS is gigantic these days (!), and continues to evolve rapidly; and this book presents a sweet-spot in between the (1) get-certified academic approach to AWS and (2) the practical, I need to get this going now demands. Highly recommended.

There is some real meat on this book. Having node.js and prior aws experience will be a big benefit to digesting the content. Unless you have built multiple lambda authentication services and been building lambda functions triggered off of dynamodb and s3 for some time, you will probably gain some knowledge from reading this book. If you are a complete aws newbie your mileage may vary and this book could be hard to digest. Ch9-11 guide you through building an authentication and media sharing app, with aws cognito, aws s3, aws lambda, and aws dynamodb working in concert. It is worth your time to read through the code which is printed in the book and understand and see how the parts are linked and working together. Unfortunately after chapter 12 the book content thins out and becomes more like a high level aws whitepaper.Cons:Aws api gateway deserves more screen time. I’m still confused about how it works especially method request/response and integration request/responseAws cloud formation did not get more screen time. Cloud formation could have had a nice supporting part in the action of ch9-11, it would have provided a aws standardized way of deployment been more informative. The author should mention node.js versioning issues that can gum up chapter 5 (see manning book forum)I’ll give 4 stars just to stand out. 4.5 is deserved but it’s not perfect.

An excellent guide that combines theory and practice really well to help get up to speed using Lambda quickly and responsibly. I also like the fact that all manning texts come with an ebook (pdf) so I don’t have to lug the physical copy around.

This is an excellent resource for getting started with serverless development .Prior to reading the book, I had the impression that AWS Lambda was just a one-trick-pony tool for building one-off utilities like automatic image thumbnail generation or adding small pieces of server-side glue code for mobile applications.In Chapter 1 my eyes were opened, as right from the beginning the book shows how you can create fully functional web and backend server equivalents just using the existing AWS services with Lambda to wire it all together with your own business logic.The author makes good use of diagrams to help visualize the flows between services throughout the book. The initial diagrams show how the interactions between AWS Events and Lambda functions can be chained together to create sophisticated flows. These flows are not that dissimilar to the flows you might already be familiar with from reactive programming styles.Chapter 2 quickly walks you through the process of building your obligatory Hello-World app and then subsequent chapters will progressively iterate to add more functionality, such as a web hooks and and security.The book assumes you don’t know very much about AWS beforehand and provides a basic introduction to some of the other related AWS services you’ll need in order to build non-trivial services. With over 80+ AWS services, no single book could ever possibly cover all of the AWS services you could might use with Lambda. Instead, this book concentrates on the services you are most likely to use with Lambda e.g IAM, Cognito, S3 etc.The book is divided into four main parts. Part 1 is a Getting Started guide. Part 2 is for Building and has a security theme (6 of the 8 chapters in this section are focused on security and authentication). Part 3 covers tools and strategies for Test, Deployment and Monitoring. Part 4 focuses on on integrations with external (non-AWS) services.Each of the chapters are quite dense with content, so it’s not something you can maybe read and walkthrough in a single lunchbreak. But the content is progressive, slowly building on the code you already know, so before you know it, you’ve got some reasonably comprehensive examples working. The examples provided are either in the NodeJS or Python languages, so a familiarity with either of those would be helpful but not essential. Each chapter ends with a well thought out exercise so you can hone your skills. This is a nice touch that I’d love to see in more books.The existing online documentation from Amazon on Lambda seems to concentrate mainly on either Reference-API themed pages or links to github examples. Both of these are certainly useful, but this book helps fill a void by actually showing you how to build up a Lambda based application from scratch and then secure it.If you’re considering using Lambda in a commercial enterprise, then this book will definitely help as it has lots of meaty examples and a strong focus on security throughout.

About the Author
Thorsten Hens, born in Germany 1961, is SFI Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Zurich's Swiss Banking Institute, a Fellow of CEPR and Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Norwegian Business School in Bergen. He studied at Bonn and Paris and held professorships in Stanford, Bielefeld and Zurich. Since 2007 he is the Director of the Swiss Banking Institute and since 2003 the scientific coordinator of NCCR-Finrisk. His research areas are -- among others -- behavioural and evolutionary finance. Thorsten Hens is ranked among the top 10 economics professors in the German spoken area (Germany, Switzerland and Austria). In researching how investors make their decisions, Professor Hens draws on work in psychology and applies insights from biology in order to understand the dynamics of financial markets. His consulting experience includes application of behavioural finance for private banking and evolutionary finance for asset management.

Kremena Bachmann, born in Bulgaria in 1976, currently holds a postdoctoral position at the University of Zurich's Swiss Banking Institute. She received an MS in Finance from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and a PhD in Finance from the University of Zurich, where she held a research position at the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics. Her research interests are behavioural finance and investment management. Mrs. Bachmann worked on different projects for Credit Suisse Asset Management and Bank Wegelin. Her teaching experience includes lectures on behavioural finance and wealth management at the University of Zurich and the Swiss Training Centre for Investment Professionals (AZEK).

This book provides a good introduction to overview of chaos theory and to fractals. I would highly recommend this book.

I was looking for an easy-to-understand book on Chaos Theory for some non-English speakers (say, some Japanese students) to read, and I personally like "Introducing Fractal Geometry", so I got my hand on this book...It was a mistake.I would not say much about this. The author did introduce Chaos, not really Chaos theory, to the readers. He tried his best, I believe, to make things easy to understand by simplifying things... However, in doing so, he had just created Chaos.Hence, this book is probably one of the best examples of "How Simplicity creates Complexity and Chaos"... a simple scheme found in Complex systems (like complex Cellular Automata which emerged from a simple set of rules).One thing, while a lot of names (technical terms) were introduced, almost all of them are left unexplained. And I think only "introducing" is never enough. (Well, it was the name of the book afterall... this book wasn't named "Explaing Chaos" :)There are other good books on Chaos for layperson. And, in fact, "Introducing Fractal Geometry" did a far better job than this one.

Well written and fairly illustrated with almost not math. A definitely must for the curious mind with no time for a degree in physics .

The main problem with the book is its emphasis on multiculteralism, not to mention that the author simply does not know his stuff. We are told that Galileo ignored friction in order to get "neat results" and somehow caused Western science to only study linear systems. He seems to think that nonlinearity and chaos are the same thing. He tells us that nonlinear problems are not solvable. He actually suggests that we have only recently seen that the three-body problem is chaotic. (Instead Poincare proved the chaotic nature of the problem around 1890.) He seems to think that Asian philosophies actually capture the mathematical substance of chaos theory. I could go on. If you want to study chaos get the volume "Chaos and Fractals: New Frontiers of Science" by Peitgen, Jurgens, and Saupe.

This is a well-reasoned, carefully thought out book that allows for a good introduction of the subject of Chaos. I wish that the volume was a bit more of a "populist" volume (like Larry Gonick used to write and draw), but that might be a bit too much to ask these days.

My personal exploration of the ideas of improvement and change have led along a path in which quantum physics, uncertainty, chaos and complexity have almost mysteriously become topics of growing relevance. It is fitting then that this book introduced me to one of the features of chaos, the strange attractor, a mechanism that draws a system's behaviour towards particular ways of operating.Books in this series can be read in a day. They use a mix of text and cartoon style graphics to convey the key ingredients of a subject in a concise and straightforward way. The challenge of describing chaos theory is not a trivial one. Though it may require a couple of re-reads, the book does a pretty impressive job of introducing the key figures in the development of chaos theory, its key concepts and how chaos affects our lives.I was intrigued for example to find Ray Bradbury Zen in the Art of Writingas the author of `A Sound of Thunder' a short story which predates the development of chaos theory.At the heart of chaos is that complex systems, which meet a small number of criteria, will produce outcomes that are deterministic, but not predictable. This seems a paradox, and as Niels Bohr said"How wonderful that we have met with a paradox. Now we have some hope of making progress."What is startling is that systems don't have to be very complex to be classed as complex, and the criteria, such as non-linear feedback can be found in most systems. The result is that chaos is all around us. What is intriguing is that science, and our desire to understand has led us to simplify our models of the world in such a way that we've created an alternate chaos free world. When we try to understand we trim off the twiddly bits and treat systems as linear. So for example our geometry is based on straight lines, yet in nature everything is raggedy edged. The fractal, is a way of seeing and appreciating the raggedness of the world and this is explored further in a related title in the series, Introducing Fractal Geometry.This volume provides an easily accessible introduction to what is I believe an important element of any real understanding of effective change processes,Perhaps further evidence of a `strange attractor' at work are the references in the final chapter to the inherent understanding of chaos within non-western cultures and belief systems such as Taoism, Buddhism Islam and Sufism. It even includes a picture of a symmetrical fractal decoration of the vestibule ceiling of the Chenar Bagh Madresseh School in Isfahan Iran. Isfahan being one of the places I visited when invited to speak recently in Iran.

I'm a fan of the Introducing series. I don't want to be too critical of this book, but I was a bit disappointed. I did learn a little more than I knew before I read it, but as many of the reviews say, the organization is a bit "chaotic" to the point where you feel you're never given a true overview of the subject. An introduction to any topic should at least try to leave you with some framework of organization for the topic as a whole.You can probably learn as much about Chaos theory by reading the Wikipedia article. If I'm going to buy a book, I want something more. Perhaps a deeper exploration into one practical application of Chaos theory that shows it as a real science with a purpose. One is almost left with the impression that Chaos theory is more a post-modern criticism of western science rather than a true alternative explanation of phenomenon.

This is an introduction. Introductions need to be boiled down, repeatedly. They need to be written for the average 14 year old, extrremely easy to read, yet with good content. This one has too many axes to grind, it is not as focused as it needs to be.
