The Emperor's Table was recently given to me as a gift, and while I don't normally read "cookbooks" cover to cover- this is more of a very readble history book, with a cooking and art theme. The artwork is wholly mughal-period miniatures and set appropriately to each section of the book, which is divided betweent he 7 most proinent Mughal Emperors, and traces the evolution and intracacy of their cuisine, as well as fascinating anecdoes about their dining habits and general trivia about their reigns. It also has a good Family Tree to help us follow along. Also, very helpful, was the brief review of Culinary Techniwques and Utensils on pages 20 to 23.I would rate it FIVE (5) Stars, but there are a few issues: some editing work is needed as far as grammar goes and a Period-appropriate Map and Table of Contents in needed (though at the end there is an index of all the recipes). Also, a good Bibliograpy and specific citations would be a welcome addition. Hopefully the second edition, if ever, could be supplemented in this way.The recipes themselves sound delicious, but if there is one jarring issue about this book it is the disconnect between the "Foreward" and the following "Authir's Note." The foreward states: "The history and growth of cuisine is an intangible heritage that has been prone to loss over time." Yet, the Author's Note very clearly conflictingly indicates: "...the recipes have been modified to an extent to suit modern times... some of the spices not available then have been included to make dishes tastier. Use of dried fruits, saffron, and ghee has been reduced considerably." I would have like to see the original recipes, and then perhaps in a side note see what the author thinks makes them taste better to her, rather than erasing the historical actuallity of these cuisines.That being said, it is a wonderful read, and I hope the author will reveal a 2nd Edition with more supplemental information. I will be the first one to purchase it!

This book is cookbook cum history book. The artwork is purely mughal-period miniatures and set beautifully and traces the evolution and intricacy of their cuisine. As the Mughal dynasty was great so was their cuisine and culture. Awesome book
Skimpy lazy book that pretends to be important and comprehensive. There is nothing in it tha is truly authoritative and there are no pictures of the finished recipes. Mostly persian recipe, not mughal cuisine with indian influence.
