About the Author

Peter Stiling is a professor of biology at the University of South Florida at Tampa. Dr. Soling obtained his Ph.D. from University College, Cardiff, Wales, and completed postdoctoral research at Florida State University. It was while he was teaching ecology at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad that the idea for this book was conceived. Dr. Stiling's research interests include plant-insect relationships, parasite-host relationships, biological control, restoration ecology, and the effects of elevated CO2 levels on native communities. He has published many scientific papers in journals such as Ecology, Oikos, and Oecologia and was an editor for Oecologia. His field research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Nature Conservancy.

I was late coming the the emyth party... but I can tell you as someone who has been in their own business for over 25 years that Michael Gerber is right on the money with his EMyth insights. I wish I had read his book at the beginning I could have saved myself a lot of time, energy, aggravation and money. This book, co-written with Fred Parrish, is a primer on the role of the CFO within your company. Most small business people rely on their accountant to tell them how they're doing -- BIG MISTAKE. The accountant is the scorekeeper, the numbers are in the past tense. A CFO is a businessperson and needs to make crucial decisions in real time. Michael is a philosopher, if you've read emyth books there isn't too much new but it is always worthwhile to read again especially in this context. Fred is the cfo/money guy. He shares true tales from the trenches. They alternate chapters. To be clear -- this is not a book on finance or accounting but it will give you a clear sense of the steps you need to take to gain control of the lifeblood of your company -- the cash. Upon reading this book I was inspired to redesign my business from the top down, to develop new metrics to measure our success, and to find ways to better monitor and manage cash. For that inspiration alone the book was worth every penny. Ways the I think the book could be improved: it needs an index, a glossary, and action checklists. I would like even more concrete examples like those found in chapters 6 and 14. I would like examples of key financial measures that I could implement. Maybe in the next edition? But what is there is enough to get anyone who is interested on their way. Thanks guys -- terrific little book. It's already to made a difference in my businesses

How refreshing to read a book that uses vocabulary targeted towards an audience with more than a 6th grade education! The author goes off on lots of tangents and although I usually prefer to read fiction, I found myself unable to put the book down. The question he tries to answer is one I had never thought about and is apparently much more difficult to answer than one would expect. If you are looking for fluffy escapism, this book is not for you. The book will definitely get you thinking.

[This is an excerpt from a full review to appear in Skeptical Inquirer] Mathematician Alan Turing is famous for a number of things, but probably the one that comes most easily to mind is the famous Turing test, a simple procedure for allegedly determining whether a computer is thinking like a human being -- or at least, whether a computer can effectively fool us into such a conclusion. Turing predicted that by the year 2000 computers would be able to trick human judges into thinking they were talking to a fellow human instead of a machine at least 30% of the time, if the conversation lasted for about five minutes. This has always seemed to me to put the bar so low as to make the entire enterprise spectacularly uninteresting. Sure enough, reading Brian Christian's The Most Human Human confirmed my impression that the so-called Turing test is one of the most hyped ideas in both artificial intelligence and philosophy of mind. The issue, as Christian makes abundantly clear throughout the book, is not whether programmers can devise a clever enough trick that can fool some people some of the time (and for a short period at that), but whether it is possible, or even if it makes sense to try, to equip computers with something akin to human intelligence and thought (please notice that I do not subscribe to non-physicalist views of human consciousness). Christian seems convinced that the key to artificial intelligence is to be found in the implications of Shannon's information theory, which deals among other things with the compression of semantic content. As Christian puts it at the end of the book: "If a computer could ... compress English optimally, it'd know enough about the language that it would know the language. We'd have to consider it intelligent -- in the human sense of the word" (emphasis in the original). Well, is some sense of knowing and intelligence this may be true. But would we have succeeded in creating an artificial intelligence substantially analogous to the human variety? Would that computer be conscious of knowing the English language? There are serious reasons to doubt it. More likely, we would have created something different, and we might need to broaden our very understanding of what "thinking" means.

I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it highly, if you're interested in consciousness, "mind vs brain" stuff, perception of art, language and/or computer science. He discusses the ever changing definition of what it means to be conscious, in the light of ever increasing computational power. He argues, quite convincingly, that the things that have been considered uniquely in the realm of we humans is being whittled away, quite quickly by machine ability.The best part of the book is the first few chapters, which expose his thesis, and has a highly coherent nature. The later chapters are interesting and all valuable, but they are more like a set of shorter, independent and more varied thoughts, all pointing towards the original theme.Mr. Christian often quotes Douglas Hofstadter's "Godel Escher and Bach" throughout - which is also a very good read. If you liked that, you'll also like this one, as they seem to draw from the same vein in many respects.I'd certainly enjoy having coffee with Mr. Christian sometime, and see how far "out of book" we can get, and how fast. ("Out of book" is a term he used, to mean exhausting the well worn conversation templates, and getting into new, creative ground).In the end, and enjoyable read, well worth the time and price.

I not only learned a lot, but also felt as if I had just walked into a room full of old friends, while also meeting some new friends to get to know.A terrific, fun, and enlightening read.

I quite enjoyed this. It was a little bit futuristic noir, a little bit Maze Runner. Hell, there might even have been a little Elijah Baley in Dhata. It was a good mix. Yes, Dhata was just a little too perfect—a little too tough, with too many connections in all the wrong places to somehow be one of the few clean cops left around. But I liked him and the book all the same. The writing was sharp (though occasionally oddly formal), the mystery progressed at a nice pace, and the persecution of Synths could easily be read as an allegory. I look forward to reading more about him. And Tucker McDougall did a marvelous job with the narration.On a side note, it's worth knowing that there is a glossary at the end of the Kindle edition that I think may be missing in the Audible version, which is a shame. I needed it for some of the slang.Note: I received an audible credit for this book from the author (and picked up a the kindle edition when it was a freebie). However, I chose to listen and review it.

I like detective stories and this one is set in the future. It had a few typos but nothing that I really cared about. The one thing that Idid care about was his use of words and initials without explaining what they meant or why they were used. This book gave a sample of the next one and it had a glossary. I wish I would have known that as I was reading this book. I did like the story though and may even read another some time.

This was the prequel to the Synth Crisis series which led Dhata Mays, the a Tampa police detective along with his partner Jason and his love Tiffanny. A mysteries case evolved with the slaughter of the population of synth's in a crude manner always taking one of their parts as well as slaughtering them. The case takes many twists and turns where you never no who is on the good or bad side. A good start to a power packed series.

Dhata Mays (the Synth Crisis Book 0) is my second read from author Greg Dragon. The prequel to The Judas Cypher, gives you more background to Dhata Mays (the main character in both books). Another short, enjoying & entertaining blend of the mystery & science fiction genres. I’ll definitely be reading more from Greg Dragon. Now I need to get more books in this series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This is a really interesting book. It has well developed characters , and is a good detective procedural story. It is set in a very believable science fiction world. Definitely worth reading.

I loved how well written this book was. Even with it wrote in future tense, it was different. However, I found myself bored with a lot of the detail, which i'll admit was needed. I just couldn't enjoy this book like I had high hopes to. It wasn't for me.

Mr Dragon can write, and keep your interest and leave you wanting more and more. I thoroughly enjoyed Dhata. The characters in this book are well defined, the story line doesn't deviate and you feel like you are there. Awesome. I have already bought the next adventure. Great job Greg.

Pretty good story overall. I liked the feel to it and the mystery combined with fantasy elements. Sometimes it didn't blend so well, but the author did a great job of making things interesting!I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

Jolie histoire d'amour sur un léger fond de lycanthropie. C'est doux c'est fluffy, pas prise de tête...Sympathique mais vraiment fort léger.
