The Emperor's Table was recently given to me as a gift, and while I don't normally read "cookbooks" cover to cover- this is more of a very readble history book, with a cooking and art theme. The artwork is wholly mughal-period miniatures and set appropriately to each section of the book, which is divided betweent he 7 most proinent Mughal Emperors, and traces the evolution and intracacy of their cuisine, as well as fascinating anecdoes about their dining habits and general trivia about their reigns. It also has a good Family Tree to help us follow along. Also, very helpful, was the brief review of Culinary Techniwques and Utensils on pages 20 to 23.I would rate it FIVE (5) Stars, but there are a few issues: some editing work is needed as far as grammar goes and a Period-appropriate Map and Table of Contents in needed (though at the end there is an index of all the recipes). Also, a good Bibliograpy and specific citations would be a welcome addition. Hopefully the second edition, if ever, could be supplemented in this way.The recipes themselves sound delicious, but if there is one jarring issue about this book it is the disconnect between the "Foreward" and the following "Authir's Note." The foreward states: "The history and growth of cuisine is an intangible heritage that has been prone to loss over time." Yet, the Author's Note very clearly conflictingly indicates: "...the recipes have been modified to an extent to suit modern times... some of the spices not available then have been included to make dishes tastier. Use of dried fruits, saffron, and ghee has been reduced considerably." I would have like to see the original recipes, and then perhaps in a side note see what the author thinks makes them taste better to her, rather than erasing the historical actuallity of these cuisines.That being said, it is a wonderful read, and I hope the author will reveal a 2nd Edition with more supplemental information. I will be the first one to purchase it!

Horribly written. I’ve been in college for 7 years and there are plenty of mistakes that were confirmed by my professor. I don’t even know how it’s still required. Got the concepts, but I felt it could of been ALOT easier.

It serves its purpose, but please be aware that since this is a hybrid book, there are no questions at the end of the chapters. And the access code is expired, so you cannot access them online. This was problematic since my professor assigned homework from these questions. Renting this book still saved me a ton of money and luckily I have some generous classmates that let me take pictures of the questions so I can complete my homework.

i bought the book because it was so much cheaper then buying it in the bookstore and because it said it came with a access code!! was so excited but when i go to register the code it says it has already been used :( so now i have to spend an additional $120 just for the code wish books were cheaper and the description didnt lie

My professor “wrote” (or should I say copied & pasted) his own “textbook.” It was awful and filled with errors and omissions. Thankfully, this helped fill in the gap and I did well in the course.

This book is probably one of the most "readible" science text books I have used. The language is easy to understand and the concepts are made simple. This book was "used" but delivered quickly and in above expectation. It was "very good" practically new condition.

Came all wrapped in black tape. Had writing inside. No smell. Cheap price to pay so that's good.

About the Author LYDIA R. DIAMOND is the author of Stick Fly (Northwestern, 2008), produced on Broadway in 2011, nominated in 2012 for an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play, and winner of the 2010 LA Critics Circle Award for Playwriting, among other prizes. Her other plays include The Bluest Eye, The Gift Horse, Harriet Jacobs (Northwestern, 2011), The Inside, Stage Black, and Voyeurs de Venus. A former Radcliffe Institute Fellow and a graduate of Northwestern University, she has taught at Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University, and Boston University.
